THE JAMES ALFRED DUNN FAMILY. 1

James Alfred Dunn was born in Alabama on October 16, 1845. Because he was opposed to secession, when the Civil War broke out, he joined the Union Army. He faced his kin in battle as they fought with the Confederacy. Apparently, there was no continued animosity, however, since he rejoined the family group at the war's end. 1

On December 23, 1869, he was married to Melissa Jane Swaim of Swaim, Georgia. Immediately following the ceremony, they rode their horses from Jamestown, Alabama, to Tupelo, Mississippi, where they resided for several years. Four of their children were born in Tupelo. 1

About 1880 his parents, J.N. and Alpha A. Pulliam Dunn, together with their sons and daughters (George, Johnny, Margaret, and Caroline) moved from near Tupelo in Lee County Mississippi to Faulkner County Arkansas. Along the way the mother died, but the others finally reached Arkansas. J.N. Dunn died April 4, 1891, and is buried in Macedonia Cemetery, Conway, Faulkner, Arkansas Cemetery in Pickles Gap. 1

James and his family stopped at Jacksonport to farm for one year. The children enjoyed watching the steamboats going up and down the White River. In 1879 they came to Faulkner County, settling at Cold Springs Bottoms (now Aklin Gap). Eventually they moved to Pickles Gap. 1

Through the years James taught school and operated a general store at Pickles Gap. Because he had "read the law," he was chosen as Justice of the Peace and became know as "Squire" Dunn. In his home or in the store he held court to settle minor community problems. During that time he also served on the Federal Grand Jury in Little Rock. 1

James and Melissa had nine children. Alpha, the oldest, married Leonard Wilson and lived in Henryetta, Oklahoma. They lost two children in a house fire. Daughter Nora married a Mr. Helms. 1

A son, Henry Clay, married Dora Harris. He was a farmer and they lived in the Happy Hollow community and reared nine children. These were: Maggie (Mrs. Floyd Sanders), Florence (Mrs. June Hackney), Virginia (Mrs. Harold Patton), Estelle (Mrs. Donald P. Ombey), Carl, Floyd, Fern (Mrs. Bob Burkard), James Abraham, Winifred (Mrs. Charles Moore), and their youngest child, Emogene, who died at age four. 1

Another daughter of James and Melissa was Minnie who married John Gore. They lived in Faulkner County for a few years, but later moved to Farmington in northwest Arkansas. There they maintained a large apple orchard and educated most of their children at the University of Fayetteville. The Gore children were: Vera (Mrs. Jay Buechley, Sr.), Dr. Ulysses Roy Gore, Bonnie (Mrs. Hunter Broyles), James. Floy (Mrs. Earl Seichert), Loyd, Bertha Opal (Mrs. Gail Drake), and Ruth, who died in infancy. 1

Rhoda Dunn was married to Ben McPherson, a farmer, and lived in Pickles Gap. They had no children. 1

Florence had two sons, Carl and Morris Ash. Later she had four Dearing children: Russell, Syble, Vera Margaret, and another son. 1

James (Jim) Hilliard was a teacher for a time before practicing law in Conway from 1912 until his death on August 28, 1932. He was the father of Kermit and Chester Dunn and another son who died early. 1

Arthur and his wife, Minnie, had five children who lived to adulthood and one son who died in infancy. When both he and his wife died young, his brothers and sisters shared the responsibility for rearing their children. They were: Murline (Mrs. Carlin), Maxine (Mrs. Norman Sloat), Bernard, Doris, and Dorothy. 1

Oscar Orlando married Gertrude Connell of Naylor. He practiced medicine in Bradford, Arkansas, until his death. Their son, Paul, is deceased. Their daughter, Mrs. Mary Lucille Blair, lives in Gardnerville, Nevada. 1

Jessie Benton married Freeda McFadden of Beedeville, Arkansas. Their children include Opal, Quentin (Church of Christ minister), Geraldine, Exa, Royce and Elsie. 1

Following Melissa's death on August 4, 1896, James married a widow, Mrs. Emma Carroll Carter, in 1897. They were the parents of Willie and Carroll. 1

James' third marriage was to Mrs. Frances Butts, widow of W.W. Butts. In 1917 they relocated to Roy, New Mexico, where he engaged in wheat farming for three years. They then returned to Pickles Gap where they lived until her death on January 22, 1922. He spent some time in Farmington with his daughter, Minnie, but came back to Faulkner County to the home of his son, Henry, where he died on December 12, 1923. Both he and his wife are buried in the Macedonia Cemetery, Conway, Faulkner, Arkansas Cemetery. 1
