Biography

Birth

Thomas Carroll was born in approximately 1685 (estimate based on the dates of birth of both his father and his sons) probably in Aghagurty, Sierkieran, King's County, now County Offaly. He was the son of Thomas Carroll and Jane McNamara.

Displacement

His father was a Lieutenant-Colonel with Carroll's Dragoons in the Stuart army, [1] and was killed in 1690 at the Battle of the Boyne. [2] He was posthumously attainted for treason in 1692 and his property confiscated. Young Thomas junior and his brother John were also seized and taken north to be raised separately as Protestants. [3]This family history was passed down orally, for a generation before being recorded in family letters, the originals now held in the O'Carroll family collection of David St John O'Carroll. They can be read on his website. [4]

Marriage

The letters claim that Thomas was raised as a Presbyterian and John as an Anglican in the Church of Ireland (Episcopalian). It is not known what became of John, but family letters state that Thomas married Elizabeth Hogg, from a prominent Presbyterian family and that they had 3 sons.

  2. Charles Carroll (b. 1710)
  3. Edward Carroll (b. c.1712) m. 1738 Sarah Bell - Issue

Descendants

The names John and Charles are traditional names within the Carroll family. It is believed that the name Edward was most likely introduced from the maternal side. The line of Thomas' eldest son Reverend John Carroll, probably ended. His only known daughter died in childhood. It is not known what became of his second son Charles. Records exist however, for his youngest son Edward and Edward's descendants, who became Quakers. [5] [6]

Death

Thomas passed away about 1750. The probate granted for a Thomas Carroll of Loughall, County Armagh on 9 May 1749, [7] could possibly relate to him.
