Biography

Anthony Carroll, was born in 1722 in Killecregane, Tipperary, Ireland. He was the son of Daniel Carroll 'of Killecregane' and Mary Browne.

Anthony's father had gone to London to study law in 1704, helped by a wealthy uncle from the colony of Maryland Charles Carroll but the profession was closed to Catholics later the same year. His father returned to Ireland and resumed farming at Lisheenboy with his father and brother.

Anthony's grandfather later obtained a 3 lives lease on land at Killecregane, for Anthony's father and for Anthony's eldest cousin. Anthony's father died in 1724, when Anthony was just 2 years old and his mother renegotiated the lease in Anthony's name.

Anthony's uncle James Carroll 'of Fingual' who had migrated to Maryland and become well-off, did not have any children. He provided for Anthony's education in his will, allowing Anthony to study for the priesthood. The will as related to Anthony stated:

Michael) if he shall not exceed 16 yrs. at death of testator, otherwise to be used for such one of his bros. as shall not be 16 yrs. at sd. time, decision to be made by exs.; residue of proceeds to be used for education of 2 sons of bro. Michael nearest 15 yrs. of age at death of testator.

Anthony became a Jesuit priest and did not marry or have children.

He was robbed and murdered in London in 1794, aged 71 or 72 years.
