"At the time of early religious persecutions in Scotland and Ireland, many people left their native land to move to America. Among them was the Carroll or McCarroll clan. Robert, Sr, his sister Jane, Hamilton, John, Edward and Richard. They first came to a place known as Mingo, then later to what is now known as Point Marion, on the Monongahala River. Richard chose to remain here and retained the Old World name McCarroll, thus this branch of the family has always been known as such. The other brothers and sister Jane (who afterward married Alexander Burns I, in 1784) came on into what is now Washington County and dropped the "Mc" which in the Erse Language meant "Son of Clan" and hereafter were known as Carroll. This was about the year of 1765. They settled on land that is now the James Montgomery farm, near the location of the Joint Schoolhouse, East Finely Township; Washington County, PA. here they became owners of a large tract of land. Edward decided to move farther south, and settled his family on thence Claysville-Burnsville Ridge, here he became owner of many hundred acres of land, which has been since divided into farms now owned by the Stout, Sprowls, Danley, Sutherland and Hutchinson families. This land is located near the Dogwood Grove Church, and was patented by Edward Carroll in 1799. It has been reported that a copy of this original patent is still in possession of the Stout family. The will of Edward Carroll written in 1801, gave this land eventually to his son, James." [1]
