Deborah Carroll was born before 1766, at the Carroll homestead in the townland of Creenagh in the Magheramesk civil parish, County Antrim, not far from Moira. She was the daughter of Edward Carroll and Sarah Bell. Her mother was from a well known Quaker family in Trummery and her father was the grandson of Colonel Thomas Carroll, a staunch Catholic who was killed at the Battle of the Boyne. His son Thomas, who was Edward's father, was sent north to be raised by a Presbyterian family. Edward was Presbyterian, but became a Quaker in midlife.
The Carroll house named Hollymount, was on the old turnpike road between Lisburn and Moira. Deborah's father had 120 acres of leasehold land, and was a farmer and linen draper.
Deborah married William English, a malt dealer from a nearby property whose family had lived there for generations. They had 4 children
