Biography

This Profile is the father of Thomas Carter III. Thomas Carter III married Mary Kilpatrick in 1751

Thomas Carter, Jr. was born in 1705 in Henrico county, Virginia. "Henrico Co. VA was a massive “shire” when established in 1634, but the area where the Michauxes and Carters resided was south of the James River, near the current Goochland, Cumberland, and Powhatan county lines. These three counties were formed, respectively, from original Henrico in 1728, 1749, and 1777. The general location is near present day Cartersville, VA. In 1733 Thomas Carter Sr. was granted 400 acres along Deep Run, a branch of Muddy Creek(now in Cumberland-near the Powhatan Co. line)." [1]

Thomas Carter Jr. was named as “second son” in his father’s will, received a yearling calf, and probably lived on his father’s land until about 1730. In Sept. 1730, he received a land grant on Licking Hole and Bolings Creeks, described as “on branches of said river, falling into the Rock Castle lowgrounds”. This land was located north of the James River, but was directly across from the Carter properties on Muddy Creek. In 1736 Thomas Jr. was granted land along Turkey Cocke Creek in what became Cumberland Co. He willed this land to his eldest son, Thomas. See researchers notes

The will of Thomas Carter, Jr. was made in Goochland Co. in February 1760, and filed there in April 1763. Nothing is known of his first marriage(s)-but he had married a Mary Killipatrick in 1751. [2] His will also noted then wife, Mary, and sons; John, Josiah, Baynes, and “my three younger daughters”; Mary Dawson, Judith and Susanna Carter. Josiah Carter inherited a 150 acre tract, part of the land north of the James River; his brother John received an adjacent 125 acres of the same “Ballows land”.

Research Notes

Our immigrant ancestor, Thomas Carter Sr., was born in England c.1680. He was among nine persons imported by Abraham Michaux to Henrico Co. VA in January 1713. Sons, Robert (about 11) and Thomas Jr. (born c.1705) were also among the immigrants. It is unclear whether wife & mother Carter, and other children were included.

Abraham Michaux received 850 acres for providing transport for the nine individuals noted above-all, presumably, indentured to him for seven years. Michaux died in 1717.

Thomas Carter Sr.’s will-dated 1726, noted a wife “Penele”, who apparently was deceased by the time of probate in June 1738. In the interval, he had married twice-but had not updated his will. His last wife was Susanna Baynes.

This site gives Thomas's wife as Mary Carroll, daughter of Roger Carroll and lists eight children

It appears as if there is a generation missing and that Thomas Carter, III is the son of this Thomas Carter. Born about 1728, in Goochland, he married Mary Kilpatrick in 1751. I don't think that there is such a person as Mary Baynes involved. See also: https://reynoldspatova.org/getperson.php?personID=I20853&tree=reynolds1

THAT Thomas Carter is the father of Thomas Carter, the Patriot, who married Lucy Farris, and is attached here as the son of his grandfather. See also: https://reynoldspatova.org/getperson.php?personID=I15691&tree=reynolds1

Carter-10271 and Carter-16831 appear to represent the same person because: There was only one Thomas Carter whose will was probated in 1763. He had a wife named Mary at the time. He had sons Thomas, Josiah and Baynes mentioned in his will and several other children. I believe he was the same man as Thomas Carter "The Elder" who gave land on Turkey Cock Creek to daughter Rebecca and her husband John McGuire in 1757. While I cannot confirm Thomas' wife or wives, I do have some information which might add to the profile, if we were to agree that Carter-10271 and Carter-16831 were most likely the same man.

Carter-10271 gives information partially about the same man and partially about another Thomas. The Thomas Carter to whom you refer as "the Elder" (but who the relevant genealogically literature usually calls Thomas Carter "Jr., of Goochland") was neither the man married to Mary "Killypatrick" (as can be seen from the probate records of her father Alexander Kilpatrick nor is there evidence beside a son being named Baynes (and spurious, onomastic evidence even then) that he (or any Thomas Carter, of which there were several others) was ever married to a Baynes. What is certain is that Thomas Carter, Jr., of Goochland, was the father of another Thomas as well as Josiah and Baynes, and that he was in turn the brother of Robert Carter of Turkey Cock Creek and that they were both sons of Thomas Carter "Sr., of Goochland" by his Merry wife. As you can see from Carter-10271 (which also includes entirely unrelated and perhaps nonsensical Baynes connections) his WikiTree entry is not the Thomas Carter intended to be the son of Thomas Carter, Sr., of Goochland. Unfortunately, poor research by earlier editors has caused several of these Carter (and specifically Thomas Carter) entries to become quite convoluted.

I agree that the WikiTree profiles for "Thomas Carter" are almost hopelessly confused. I also realize that Thomas "the Elder" is the same man as Thomas "Jr. of Goochland". My original plan was to delete the wives shown in Carter-10271 as no evidence is provided, and add Rebecca as daughter. That might stimulate more discussion on her and she is a key link with early McGuire research. But I had second thoughts about the deletion idea and dropped back to suggest we merge the two profiles. The manager for Carter-1071 appears to be inactive. If you would prefer to delay any merge, I'm fine with that. There is a substantial amount of detail for Rebecca's father and I was just hoping to find a place to put it. Both of the existing profiles are poorly sourced and even though I may not be able to resolve the Carter family history to anyone's satisfaction, there is a lot of original data not represented in WikiTree.

Pardon my typo. The Carter-1071 above should be Carter-10271.
