Biography

George Carter was born in England,1809. [1]

George and Alice Orton were married on the 10th of September, 1832, in Parish Shilton, of County Warwick, England. In the presence of Richard Tidman and Dinah Orton (Alice's sister). [2] Nine children were born of this union, two were born in the United States of America.

Carter’s arrive in the US, 1851

George & Alice Carter emigrated from England with their first seven children. Departing England from the port of London, 22 November 1850, they secured passage in steerage aboard the packet ship Northumberland [3][4]. Arrived in the United States at the Port of New York, on 8 January 1851.

Settled in Fleming, Cayuga County, New York

George purchased an 11 acre farm for $400, 11 months after their arrival in the US. The deed shows this sale was recorded 16 December 1851. The property was purchased from Amos & Betsey Morgan, is located near Fleming, Cayuga County, New York. The farm is situated due west of Fleming. [5][6]

1855 – New York State Population Census, town of Fleming, Cayuga County, New York: The family group first appears in the 1855 New York state population census, town of Fleming, Cayuga County, New York – George & Alice and their six youngest children: Elizabeth, Jane, Jesse, Mark, Alice and Mary A. Living together in a framed house, valued at $25. John Carter,(born in England, age 15), is listed as a servant in the household of Roswell & Sarah Watkins, also of Fleming.

1860 – Federal Population Census, town of Fleming Cayuga County, New York: George & Eleanor and their five youngest children: Jane, Jesse, Mark, Alice, Mary. The youngest children Alice and Mary were born in Fleming, Cayuga County, New York. James, & wife Elizabeth and Jane Carter (?) recorded living next to his parents. Elizabeth Carter (age 16,) is listed as a servant in the household of William & Hannah Goodrich of Springport, Cayuga County, New York.

1865 – New York State Census, town of Fleming, Cayuga County, New York: Alice Carter (widow) living in a framed building with sons Jesse & Mark and daughters Alice & Mary A. Next door are son John & Eliza Carter and their 8 mo. old son George A. Carter. Also in Fleming is son George Carter & wife Margaret.

1870 – Federal Population Census, town of Fleming Cayuga County, New York: Alice Carter is living with son Jesse Carter (age 22 head of household). Also, in Fleming is son George & Margaret Carter.

1870 – Federal Population Census, town of Larrabee, Waupaca County, Wisconsin: Mark Carter his wife Angelina and son Eugean, in the same household is his bother John & wife Eliza and three children: George, Martha and Wilson.

1875 - New York State Census, town of Fleming, Cayuga County, New York: Alice (63) living with son Joseph (Jesse) and his wife Theresa Carter and family. Living nearby are George & his wife Margaret Carter.

Final Resting place

Geroge Carter passed away April 9, 1864. His wife 11 January 1878 is buried beside him in Fleming Rural Cemetery, Fleming Cayuga County, New York. [7]
