Biography

James may have been a British sailor who deserted ship and settled on Moose Island shortly before the 1790 Census. One reason for thinking this is because right before the War of 1812 broke out, James moved his family to Ox Cove (Pembroke) due to fear that he and his sons would be impressed into service with the British Navy. His fear was well founded as the British did occupy Moose Island during that war.

We know the first name of James Carter Sr's wife. It was Deborah. In 1850 she was living with her son Samuel Carter and his wife (Sarah/Sally Cox) and their children in Pembroke, Maine. Deborah was 83 at the time of the Census taken on August 29, 1850. That would put her birth around 1767. Most Carter family historians believe she was a Native American from the Passamaquoddy tribe. Some disagree that her maiden name was Newell.

In the 1810 Census there were a total of 11 people living in the Carter household. Only two (James & Deborah) were over the age of 25. We can assume the other 9 were their children. Note that four of James and Deborah's sons married four daughters from the same Cox family, namely the family of Nathaniel Cox Jr. who lived in Edmunds Township (Plantation No. 10). One of those marriages, between Samuel Carter and Sarah/Sally Cox, was reported in the Eastport Sentinel (see reference below).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
