James Carter and Elizabeth Pendry were married after banns at St Peter's, Woolhampton, Berkshire on 23rd May 1816.[1]
There is another possible child, Thomas, baptised at Beenham on 24th November 1830, which may have been a private baptism as there is a second one on 30th January 1831. The first gives surname "Smith or Carter" and the second "Smith alias Carter". This is the only baptism that states this second surname so it is not clear whether he belongs to James and Elizabeth. Note that the 1841 census includes a Thomas born in 1829, but as this census does not give relationships it is not certain that he was their child (although likely) and Thomas born in 1831 is no longer living with James and Elizabeth by 1851. In order to confirm that he is their child we need to find the parents of James (was he baptised before they married and his mother's maiden name was Smith?) or a marriage record for Thomas that states James as his father

Thomas (1823 Binfield) was the son of Eliza - no father was stated. Charles (1825 Oxford), Joseph (1826 Oxford), Ann (1827 Oxford), Mary (1829 Oxford) and Jane (1833 Oxford) cannot be the children of this James as he cannot have been married to two women at the same time. Also the 1841 census shows a James and Elizabeth with this set of children living in Oxford. I'll happily sort this out but wanted to mention it to you first in case you wanted to do this yourself
