Ancell, Ansell, Ansyll, or Ansyle Carter, (AKA "William Ancell" usedonly by the Mourning Carter Walker Family Bible). Ancell had a brother named William - apparently two different men.
Ancell Carter was baptized on October 28, 1591 at Kempston, Bedfordshire, England, son of William Carter and Mary Anscell, "of Kimpson who settled in London."[1][2][3] His was a family of good standing, educated and influential. This is borne out by his son's acceptance in the best society in Virginia.[2]
The first name is spelled Ancell in the extract of his (probably) baptism, published as Genealogia Bedfordiensis; being a collection of evidences... (mainly parish registers and Bishops Transcripts) (p v),[1] Ansyle in The Visitation of London ..., but the informant is named as Ansell in the same pedigree![4] and spelled Anscell by Tyler[5] and Ansell in his will.
Only the Mourning Carter Walker Family Bible used the name "William Ancell Carter." This would seem to be the same person listed as baptized on Oct 28, 1591 at Kempston as son of William Carter and listed by Miller as the thirteenth child (of seventeen) of William Carter and Mary Ancell, spelled "Ancel" and italicized (as if he had copied the spelling, but unfortunately he did not share his source). The birth date, October 28, 1591, is given in both. This was the date of his baptism. Thereafter, Miller used the spelling "Ancell."[2]
There is also a record for a Thomas Carter who was christened on 11 Oct 1605 at Marston-Moretaine, Bedford, England, the son of William.[6] Unclear how this record might be associated with Ancell Carter, as his son named Thomas was born c. 1630,[2] but it is sometimes cited in reference to this family.
The Mourning Carter Walker Family Bible reports that "Anscell" married July 2, 1618 in Rampton, Bedfordshire, England to Jane Myles. There is no such place in Bedfordshire. But there is a marriage of Ansell Carter and Jane Miles at Watton at Stone, Hertfordshire on 2 Jul 1618 [7]She is shown to be the daughter of John Myles of Graveley in Com. Hertford,[5]per the pedigree in The Visitation for Hertfordshire, in 1634.[5] Ancell, as "Ansyle," is called "of London grocer" in The Visitation of London ...[4]
According to Joseph Miller, in 1634 at the visitation of the Heralds from the College of Arms, "Ansyll, of London, Grocer," had six sons living.: George, John, Ansyle, William, James, and Thomas.[2] Miller believes this son Thomas was the immigrant to Virginia, but there may be no documentation to proving this. But the Visitation only shows four sons, not six. George, John, Ansyle and William, plus a daughter Jane.
According to Miller, children were:[2]
According to Tyler, children of Anscell and Jane Myles:[5] The Visitation of London, Anno Domini 1633, 1634, and 1635... confirms this, showing the four sons and one daughter, but no Thomas.[4]
Tyler identified Thomas, who was 1 year old at the Visitation at Hertfordshire England in 1634.[5] To be thorough, mention is made that the generation prior where The Visitation mentions only two of seven known sons.[4]
Unclear whether Ancell came to Virginia and patented land (?) [citation needed] As there is no evidence at all that he went to Virginia it's difficult to provide a citation proving a negative. In his 1558 will he decribed himself as "Citizen and Grocer in Fleet Street London".He was a party, as Ansell Carter, in a litigation in London in 1647 [8], and in another as Anselm in 1656 although this may have been his son[9]
Ancell Carter's will was dated 5 Nov 1658 and was probated September 3, 1661 the same day as his son George Carter's will was probated, so he died between these two dates[10] See son George Carter for property owned and other family members.
Alternatively, according to the Mourning Carter Walker Family Bible, Ancell died in 1634 at Kempston, Bedfordshire, England.[11] Possibly he did not immigrate, or he returned to England and died there.
Research is needed concerning possible immigration and place of death.
Alternate death date September 5, 1644 at Kempston, Bedfordshire, England (without citation). There is no burial in Kempston parish register for him in either 1634 or 1644 or at Lancaster, Virginia. But how about London where he had a grocers shop? Very few people who die in 1634 or 1644 make wills in 1658!
The "Mourning Carter Walker Family Bible" should be viewed with caution, especially in regard to the earlier entries. James Turner Walker was born in 1795.[12][11]

Which Ancell Carter married to Mary Ann Emmery? Thanks!
In addition, the use of the "middle name," William causes only confusion, between this and the earlier generation, and between this and the younger brother, named William.
