Charles' parents and most of his siblings are confirmed by the 1850 United States Federal Census[1] The Census shows that Charles was about 16 years old and was a farmer, working with his father on the family farm located in the Western District of Scott County, Virginia.
Charles married Mary 'Elizabeth' Kidd (1835 - 1857) on 7 Feb 1855 in Scott, County, Virginia, United States.[2]
It is believed that one child belonging to the couple. Rebecca Etna Carter was born Jackson County, Kentucky on 30 May 1857 and passed away on 20 January 1937. She married James Neeley.
Charles enlisted in the Union Army at Camp Dick Robinson, Kentucky, on 22 September 1861. He was enlisted as a Private in the 7th Infantry Regiment, Company D. [3]
Charles passed away from disease while still in the Infantry on 29 July 1863 in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee. He was laid to rest in the Mississippi River National Cemetery, located in Memphis.[4]
