Biography

Lilian May Carter daughter of shipwright, James Fry Carter, and his wife, Alice Coles was born in Portsmouth in 1885. ^[1]Her father was a naval shipwright supporting a wife and five children in Waterloo Street in 1891. ^[2] They had moved to Montgomerie Road by 1901 ^[3] and had moved just across the street by 1911 by which time Lilian was working as a dressmaker on her own account. ^[4] Her father died on the 16th of January 1913 at the Royal Portsmouth Hospital, Landport, aged 58. ^[5] His estate worth £125 was probated to his widow, Alice on the 17th of February.^[6]

When the wartime register was taken in 1939 Lilian was still living in her mother's home in Montgomerie Road with her sister, Alice, and Alice's husband, Frederick Clark. ^[7] Her mother died towards the end of 1941. ^[8]

In 1947, aged about 62, Lilian married widower Alfred Edward Saunders ^[9] who died on the 30th of December. ^[10] Lilian moved back in with Alice and Frederick. The house had very little if any modernising while they lived there. The women still did the ironing with flat irons heated on plates in front of the fire in the kitchen. ^[11]

Fred died in 1961. ^[12]

Lilian died on the 18th of December 1969. ^[13]
