Biography

Index of birth records for Saybrook give only the father's name, as Samuel.[1]

Transcript from American Genealogist Vol 57, (1981) states: "Further data on his children are found in a deed (Sharon Deeds 14:337) dated 26 Jan 1786 in which … Asa Carter and Anna his wife of Sharon … for £56 sell to Levi Smith of Sharon 65 acres…"[2] Massachusetts. Asa Carter Pvt. in Capt. William Greenleaf's Co. enlisted Aug. 22, 1777 in the 2nd Worcester Company, Mass. He moved to Greenwich Town, Washington County, New York. He erected a mill at Carter's Lake and is listed in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 census of Washington County. He died at age 70 and was buried in Sand Street Graveyard, six miles north east of Greenwich, N.Y. [3] A transcript of his last will and testament:<p> A copy of the last will and Testament of Asa Carter deceased. Recorded June 3d 1813. — In the name of God. I Asa Carter of the town of Greenwich in the County of Washington and state of New York being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory, blessed be almighty God for the same do make and publish this my last will and Testament in manner and form following: That is to say, First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Anne the one third of all my real and personal properties and tenements [for] her life time. I do also give and bequeath unto my two Eldest sons Jesse and Amasa five hundred dollars a piece - at the decease of my beloved wife Anne – I do also give and bequeath to my three youngest sons, Josiah, Levi and Joseph the sum of seven hundred and fifty dollars a piece at the decease of my wife Anne – I do also give and bequeath to my eldest daughter Anne the sum of four hund[red] dollars at the decease of my beloved wife Anne – I do also give and bequeath to my daughter Betsy the sum of three hundred dollars at the decease of my beloved wife Anne – I do give and bequeath to my daughter Polly the sum of two hundred dollars at the demise of my beloved wife Anne – I do give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth the sum of three hundred dollars at the decease of my beloved wife Anne which said several legacies or sums of money I will and order shall be paid to the respective legatees at the decease of my wife Anne – I further give and devise to my sons Josiah and Levi their heirs and assigns all that my messuage or tenement situated lying in the town of Greenwich county of Washington and state of New York together with all my other freehold estate whatsoever – to hold to them the said Josiah and Levi their Heirs and Assigns forever to hold I will and appoint the above said Josiah and Levi sole Executors of this my last will and Testament hereby revoking all former will[s] by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the fifth day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eight. Asa Carter L .S. Signed sealed published and d??land by the above named Asa Carter to be his last will and Testament in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses in the presence of the Testator. Levi Samson, Elijah Mentry, Benjamin Spencer.[4]
