Biography

John Carter was born in 1773, in Prince William county, Virginia, a son of John Fitzhugh Carter and Janet Hamilton. [1] John's father was born in 1739, at the named plantation 'Sabine Hall' in Richmond County, Virginia. About 1760, in His father built "Sudley House", in Prince William county, Virginia, where John and his siblings were born. John's father is referred to in most books about the Carters as John "of Sudley" Carter. John's estate is referred to as "Number Six. [2]

Issue of John and Eliza (Brook) Carter of Number Six:

  • Landon Carter, married Eliza Triplett and had: Henry F. John F., Pinkney, Gertrude and Millie
  • John B. Carter, died unmarried
  • Robert Carter, married Eliza P. Hall
  • William H. Carter, married _____ Ister
  • Augusta Carter
  • Fitzhugh Carter
  • Thomas T. Carter, married Sarah Taliaferro, and had: Robert, Shirley, and Eliza
  • Harriett Carter, married William O. Shelton.

John died March 2, 1838, at "Mountain View" and is buried in the Taliaferro/Carter Family Cemetery, Ridgeview Country Club, 16850 Sudley Road, Centreville, Virginia. [3]
