Isabella Gunn (nee Carter) (aged 20), together with her husband John Gunn (aged 26) and their one year old son David, sailed from the UK on 16 June 1859 as assisted immigrants aboard the Cashmere bound for New Zealand. After a four-month voyage they reached the port of Lyttleton on 11 October, 1959. They settled initially in Christchurch and subsequently Templeton, a small village a short distance south of Christchurch. During that time they had two more children John Carter Gunn (who died aged 15 in 1875) and Agnes.
Isabella's husband John Gunn died of heart disease on 23 July 1862, aged 30. Five years later, on 29 March 1867, Isabella married James Innes, another Scot from Thurso, Caithness.
