Biography

Joseph McCarroll Carter was born on 25 March 1838 in Roane County, Tennessee. [1] He was a son of Moses Looney Carter Sr. and Cynthia Isabella McCarrell. [2] He married Elizabeth Williams in 1859 in Polk County, Missouri. [3] [4] [5] [6] He passed away on 15 May 1902 in Hobart, Logan County, Arkansas. He was interred in Elizabeth Hall Cemetery, New Blaine, Logan County, Arkansas. [1]


Joseph served with the 29th Texas Cavalry, Company H, Confederate States of America. He enlisted in July of 1862. Company H was raised in Collin County, Texas, under Captain William A. Brown, where Joseph McCarrell Carter is listed as a sergeant.
The 29th Texas Cavalry participated in a number of battles and skirmishes in Arkansas in 1864.
The 29th also participated in a number of battles in the Indian Territory in 1863 and 1864.
By 1868 Joseph had moved his family to Johnson County, Arkansas. They moved to the area known as "Carter Mountain" in Harkey Valley near New Blaine in Logan County, Arkansas. (Logan Co. was formed from Johnson Co.) He had received Homestead Certificate #63336 for 160 acres of land in Arkansas by the Government Land Office on Sept. 18, 1894.
