Death of Mrs. Amanda C. Akard
Amanda Caroline Carter was born Dec. 27, 1847 near Bolivar. She was a daughter of Moses L. and Cyntha Carter and one of a family of 15 children of which only one is now living, Mrs. Lou Lee, of Centralia, Mo., who on account of poor health was unable to be at the bedside of her sister. Married, June 8, 1871 to James M. Akard. To this union four children were born, Fredrick, Mrs. Lily Craig, Mrs. Addie Brown and Jimmie. Mrs. Craig is the only one now living. The spirit took its flight to that better world on Sunday, September 27, 1925.
Mrs. Akard professed a hope in Christ in 1893 and united with the Christian church of which she remained a faithful and consistant member.
She is survived by the husband, one sister and one daughter and one granddaughter, Catherine Craig, and other relatives. Besides these all who ever knew her mourn her demise.
Mrs. Akard was of a most cheerful disposition, being cheerful and hopeful thru the darkest hours which can come to a mother. Her cheerfulness helped not only herself and members of her family but all who met her and esspecially those needing comforting words.
Mrs. Akard took the lead in changing the old cemetery from a neglected unkept place to the condition it is now in. For several years solicited some funds and with a liberal donation by herself began the work which she requested others to assist and to tahe up which was done.
The family moved to Cedar county more than forty years ago. At first their home was in Jefferson township, later west of Stockton and in Stockton. A few years ago it became necessary that she have the care of her daughter and they moved back to the old home west of town where she had from Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Craig and their daughter the most devoted care and attention.
Everyone in this community have the deepest sympathy for the bereaved husband, the daughter and other relatives.
The funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by Elder L. L. Tucker at the Presbyterian church. His tribute to this good mother and all other mothers was beatiful.
Mrs. Akard had been a member of the order of the Eastern Star many years ago and wished to become to become of the new chapter but her health prevented. However the members of the order formed an escort in the funeral service in her honor.
The remains were laid to rest in the City Cemetery.
Old neighbors and friends from Jefferson township and a number of relatives from Polk county were present at the funeral.
