Edward Carter, son of John "Secretary" Carter and Elizabeth Hill and a Grandson of Robert "King" Carter, was born at Shirley, in 1733 and died in 1792 a the home of a daughter Elizabeth (Carter) Stanard, wife of William Stanard, which was a planation called Roxbury in Spotsylvania county, Virginia. He is said to be buried at Roxbury and his Will is probated in Spotsylvania County.
Edward's father had a Patent for 9,350 acres of land in Albemarle county, Virginia. The patent was issued in 1730 and died not "belong" to John, but was put in trust for him so that he would find families to pioneer and settle that part of Virginia. John never lived in Albemarle, but the Carter name is commemorated in that county in the name "Carter Mountain," given to a range of mountains which lay within the boundary of the patent. [1]
Edward Represented Albemarle County in the House of Burgesses 1767, 1768 and 1769 and the House of Delegates from Albemarle 1785 and 1788. Edward married Sarah Champe, born 1733 a daughter of Colonel John Champe and his wife, Jane. Edward and Sarah resided at "Blenheim," in Albemarle county, Virginia. All of the children of Edward and Sarah were born at Blenheim:
The will is also included in a Virginia Chancery Court Case in Albemarle County involving the division of land and property to the seven youngest sons of Edward Carter.[4]
