Biography

Elizabeth Carter was born in Lancaster County, Virginia about 1725; the daughter of Robert Carter and Priscilla Churchill.[1]

Mr. Charles P. Keith writes to me in regard to the marriage of Francis Willis to Elizabeth Carter: [2] Robert Carter, of Nomini, married Priscilla, dau. of William Churchill, and had Robert, commonly called Councillor Carter, and Elizabeth, who married Willis.

Robert, of Nomini, was son of Robert (King) Carter by his 2d wife, Betty Landon."On 30 Sep 1742, she married Francis Willis in Gloucester County.

Elizabeth died before 1773."To George Washington from Francis Willis, 7 February 1774.” [3]

"Willis's wife Elizabeth Carter Willis was dead before 1773, and he and his first cousin Lewis Willis, it would seem, courted Daniel French's widow, Penelope Manley French of Rose HIll in Fairfax County. Lewis Willis's late first wife was Mary Champe Willis, and he took his sister-in-law Anne Carter Champe as his second wife in 1773."

QUISENBERRY, HUMPHREY, 30 Jan. 1773; 24 Sept. 1776. Estate to wife and three children by her, viz:

  • Elizabeth,
