1. 1. As both the Oct. 1681 christening date for Mary, and the Aug 1681 marriage date for William and Penelope are quite firm... it appears that Mary may have been conceived out of wedlock. Quite unusual forthe time and place. Mary's marriage to John Bristow is often erroneously ascribed to her step-mother Mary Goodloe as a 2nd marriage, although he almost certainly married THIS Mary... as the marriage date preceded her father William's death by almost a month... and the birth date for hiswife usually coincides with Mary the daughter of William Carter and Penelope Pew. As she also had a much younger step-sister Mary by her father's second marriage to Mary Goodloe... it isn't always clear WHICH Mary Carter the records are referring to after William's death in 1711. For example, it's not quite clear that the Mary Carter that died in 1744 is Mary Goodloe... or THIS Mary.
