Biography

Lewis Carter was born January 2, 1816, in Montgomery County, North Carolina, a son of Henry Carter and Mary Frances Stoker. Lewis Carter was married three times. On October 5, 1840, in Gates, North Carolina, Lewis married Nancy Pearce. [1] Children of Lewis and and Nancy include:

  • Josiah Linden Carter, born April 13, 1844, in North Carolina, died December 7, in Kaufman County, Texas, married Leair A. Yost, in 1889. [2]
  • Ridley Ann Carter, born December 15, 1850, died March 27, 1933, in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, married Levi Harrison Mason. [3]

In 1862, Lewis married Mrs. Caroline (Russell) Austin, born June 27, 1833, in Montgomery County, North Carolina, a daughter of Jarrott Russell and Frances Solomon, and widow of Samuel S. Austin Children of Carolina and Lewis include:

  • Reverend Washington Lee Carter 1868-1938 married Martha Julia Sides [4]
  • Mary Ann Dovie (Carter) Morris 1870-1943, married Joseph Henry Morris, in 1889 [5]
  • Richard Travis Carter 1874-1943, married Louise Anderson Blalock [6]

Caroline (Russell) Carter died February 11, 1882, at the age of 48 years, in Stanly County, North Carolina and is buried in the Thompson Family Cemetery, in New London. [7] After her death, Lewis Carter married Rachel Serena Moose, born June 24, 1841, a daughter of Matthias Moose and Elizabeth Lyerly. Lewis Carter died May 10, 1888, in Stanly County, North Carolina and is buried in the Thompson Family Cemetery, in New London. [8]

Researchers Notes

Henry Carter was born 1782, in North Carolina, a son of Samuel Carter who is honored for his Patriotic Service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor # A020062. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of Henry Carter and his wife, Mary Stoker. [9] Descendants of Lewis Carter are eligible for membership in the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution.
