Biography

Mary Carter daughter of Samuel Carter and Dorothy Wilder was born about 1719. [1] She was baptized at the First Church, Lancaster, Massachusetts on February 1, 1718/19. [2]

She married John Whetcomb at Lancaster on June 12, 1735. [3] [1] He was born about 1712, son of John and Rebecca (Wilder) Whitcomb, [4] and baptized at Lancaster on March 13, 1713/14. [2]

In March 1728, in his sixteenth year, he requested his uncle Joseph Sawyer become his guardian. [5]

They resided first at Lancaster, but removed to Bolton, Massachusetts where her husband operated a successful lime quarry on property he inherited from his father. [6] [4]

Mary died at Bolton on February 3, 1744, in her 26th year. [7] [1] [4] She is buried in the Old South Burying Ground, at Bolton. Her inscription reads: Here lyes buried ye body of Mrs Mary Whitcomb wife of Mr John Whitcomb who departed this life February ye 3d AD 1743/4, in her 26th year. [8] [9]

They had three daughters:

  1. May born at Bolton on January 20, 1739. [7] [1]
  2. Abigail born at Lancaster on February 13, 1737/8. [3] [1]
  3. Dorothy born at Bolton on April 13, 1743. [7] [1]

They are all named in their father John's will written on January 22, 1785 in which he left bequests to, among others:

  • heirs of my eldest daughter Abigail
  • heirs of my second daughter Mary
  • my third daughter Dorothy [10]

About a year after her death, John married secondly, Bekke Whitcomb, aged 18 years. He died at the age of 73 on November 17, 1785 [7], and is buried with his wives at the Old South Burying Ground. His inscription reads: Here lies interred the Body of John Whetcomb, Esq. of Bolton, who departed this life Novr ye 17 1785 in the 73d year of his age. [9] [11]
