Biography

Samuel Carter (2 of 2 - 2nd son named Samuel)

Samuel was a son of Samuel Carter (1640 - 1693) and Eunice (Brooks) Carter Parker Kendall (1655 - ____).

He married Dorothy Wilder in March, 1701 in Lancaster, Worcester, MA [1]

Children: Samuel Carter III, Eunice Carter Osgood, Nathaniel Carter, Dorothy Carter Fairbank, Anna Carter Knight, Jonathan Carter, Ephraim Carter, Oliver Carter, Mary Carter Whitcomb, Elizabeth Carter Osgood, Prudence Carter Buss, and Josiah Carter.

Property and Positions

Samuel lived on the North side of the road that goes up George Hill, a little to the north of the school house, on the site of, perhaps in the very house recently (??) torn down, known as the Capt. Ephraim Carter house, his father, Rev. Samuel, having purchased two lots of Capt. Henry Kerley in 1688.

Samuel was Selectman in 1723 and served on various committees for the location of highways, etc.

He was assigned to a garrison on George Hill with his brothers-in-law, Lt. Nathaniel and Ephraim Wilder, Thomas Ross and his brother, John Carter, and lost by an attack of Indians July 31, 1704, one cow, one horse, two calves, two swine, and one good dwelling house with two fires.[3][4]

Death and Legacy

Inscription: "Here Lies Buried Ye Body of Mr. Samuel Carter Who Deceased August Ye 22d. Anno Dom. 1738 & in Ye 61st Year of His Age." Burial: Old Settlers Burial Yard, Lancaster, Worcester County, Massachusetts.

Probate

Samuel Carter of Lancaster, died intestate and on 9 November 1738, his widow Dorothy and Ephraim Carter were granted the administration of his estate.[5]

His inventory was taken on 12 September 1738 in Lancaster.[6]
