Biography

Mary Carter was born July 24, 1648 at Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.[1] She was a daughter of Rev. Thomas Carter and Mary Parkhurst.[1]

Mary came to Hampton with Nathaniel Batchelder once they were married.[2] Nathaniel was born in England, but came to Hampton in early life.[3] She remained there with him and her large family for the rest of her life.[3]

Mary died in 1688 at Hampton, New Hampshire.[3] Nathaniel died January 17, 1719, at 80 years of age.

Family

Mary married twice.[1]

She married (1) 23 April 1671 to John Wyman, Jr.[1] He was killed 19 December 1675 at the Narraganset Fort Fight, as one of Captain Prentice's troops.[4]

Mary married (2), probably at Woburn, 31 October 1676, as his 2nd wife, Nathaniel Batchelder.[3].[3] After Mary died, he married Elizabeth, widow of John Knill,[3] as his third wife.

Mary was said to have been a cousin of Nathaniel's first wife, Deborah Smith,[1] daughter of John and Martha Smith of Martha's Vineyard.[3] Mary hesitated to marry Nathaniel, because he brought eight children with him from his first marriage[3] She apparently left her son, John, with his grandparents, as his "education was attended to by her father."[3] Mary and Nathaniel had nine more children together, for a total of seventeen, said to be the largest family in Hampton (as of 1910)[3]

Wyman-431 and Carter-336 appear to represent the same person because: Wyman-431 is part of an unconnected and unsourced family group of 9 individuals with practically no information except for their relation to each other. The names of the people in this group correspond to the names in the main connected group.
