Daniel Carter

Origins

Daniel was born c. 1700 at Barford, Lancaster County, Virginia. He was a son of Capt. Thomas Carter and Arabella Williamson.[1] When he was born in Lancaster, Virginia, his father, Thomas, was about 28 and his mother, Arabella, about 25. He had five brothers.

The birth date is estimated, as based upon his marriage c. 1725.

Marriage

Daniel married about 1722 to 1725 to Elizabeth Pannill daughter of William Pannill of Rappahannock/Richmond County, Virginia.[2][1]

Children

Children of Daniel Carter and Elizabeth:[2]

  1. William Pannil Carter, b c. 1724-5, d 1794 at Prince William Co.
  2. John Carter, killed by Indians
  3. Joseph Carter, settled on one of the Carolinas
  4. Thomas Carter, settled on one of the Carolinas. Other sources indicate that Thomas "removed to Culpeper"[3]
  5. Robert Carter, quarreled with his father
  6. Margaret Carter; m William Kent
  7. Mary E. Carter; m John Kirk
  8. Frances Carter, b 1738, d 1830 unmarried
  9. Daniel Carter, b 1738, d Oct 1, 1794

The above are the only known children of Daniel and Elizabeth. Others include the child below (without evidence or source).

Attorney and Planter

Daniel served as attorney for Robert Biscoe on 17 May 1725.[3] He was also a planter with a farm of about 350 acres and slaves.[2]

Death and Legacy

Daniel died in 1759 at Lancaster County, Virginia. His estate was divided on 16 November 1759.[3][4] One-third went to his widow, Elizabeth, and the remainder was divided equally between the children: Daniel Carter, John Carter, Francis Carter, William Kent, John Kent, John Kirk, and Thomas Carter (Will Book 16, Page 75).[4] The estate included eight Negroes and was worth a total of £343 2s 4d.[2]

4th Great-grandfather of Theodore Roosevelt[5]

At one time, a different Thomas Carter was attached as a son of Daniel. Recent DNA studies raise doubts as to whether Thomas Carter (Carter-5679) of Edgefield, SC is the son of Daniel Carter. Additional work needs to be done. This line tested Y-DNA E-M2 while proven descendants of Thomas Carter married Kathrine Dale have tested Y-DNA R-M269. As a result of these tests Thomas Carter of Edgefield was removed as a son of Daniel Carter and Elizabeth Pannil (John Richburg, Richburg-78). Miller's book mentions that Daniel married a widow. This might explain the questions concerning the Thomas Carter that is attached. Follow up DNA work has been done and Thomas Carter Carter-5679 is not a descendant of this Daniel Carter . Many trees on different sites show this but Carter-5679 is NOT a son of Daniel. Richburg-78 (8-12-21)

A direct ancestral relationship described in the profile is not established, because the necessary son, Thomas Carter Esquire (1725-1774), is not connected:

Theodore and Daniel are 10th cousins five times removed.

Wikitree has Byron Carter with Y DNA of I-M253 listed as anancestor. All of Daniel Carter's family ancestors have tested R-M269 Y-DNA.

That is an important distinction of which Byron Carter should be made aware: the conclusion being that his ancestry as connected here on WikiTree may be incorrect. Do you have a link that discusses the Daniel Carter DNA project, perhaps, that you could share with Byron directly?

Just so the profile managers are aware, as presently configured, the family constellation includes no connection to Roosevelt.

The G2G discussion: "sources cited at Famous Kin (re Oswald, Roosevelt) but putative son Thomas isn't connected" that is linked to this page discusses the debate. Perhaps someone with better access or familiarity with the sources can find a definitive link between this generation and the appropriate son "Thomas Carter."

Thank you.
