Biography

1776 Project
Sergeant Edward Carter served with 5th North Carolina Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Sergeant Edward Carter was born May 29, 1761, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, a son of Samuel Carter and Mary Barnes. Edward migrated from Pennsylvania to North Carolina, where he served as a Sergeant in Alderson's company of the 5th Regiment, under the command of Colonel Edward Buncomb, a plantation owner from the Province of North Carolina who served as a colonel in the North Carolina militia and Continental Army. [1]

Edward Carter is honored for his military service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor #A019905. DAR records indicate that he resided in Burke county, North Carolina, and Wilkes county, North Carolina (see notes) and that he died March 11, 1838, in Rabun county, Georgia. Edward married 1) Mary Brown and 2) Isabella Groce. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of his sons, Solomon Carter, who married Alvira Hopper; Jesse Carter, who married Lavina Sams; and Josiah Henry Carter, who married Jane Pinson. [2]

According to his Find A Grave memorial, Edward and Mary Brown were the parents of nine children, eight of which have memorials attached to their parents. Edward and Mary are buried in the churchyard of the Head of Tennessee Baptist Church, in Dillard, Rabun county, Georgia. [3]

Research Notes

In 1777, Burke County was formed from Rowan County.

Wilkes county, North Carolina was formed on April 20, 1778 by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly of 1778 from parts of Surry County and Washington District (now Washington County, Tennessee).
