Biography

Mabel Carter, born February 28, 1912 in Staples, Minnesota, was the youngest of four daughters born to Ellsworth Carter and Alice Laird. ^[1]

Mabel graduated from Staples High School in May of 1931. ^[2]

She married Earl S. Nelson in June or July 1931. Their son and only child Donald was born on July 13, 1932 in Wadena County, Minnesota. ^[3]

The 1940 Census shows their address as 1011 E 67th Street, Inglewood California, and their residence in 1935 was reported to be Staples Minnesota. By the date of the Census interview, they had already purchased their home. This suggests that Earl and Mable moved from Minnesota sometime between 1936 and 1938. ^[4]

In the 1950's, Mabel ran Nelson's Chinchilla Ranch in Gardena, California, while Earl, her husband, worked as a union carpenter. They sold or closed the ranch some time between 1961 and 1962. A number of Hollywood personalities were among her customers.

In about 1962, they moved to Artesia, California, around the corner from their son Don's family. Mabel was an avid gardener, with a beautiful yard that included roses and fucias.

In 1977, Earl and Mabel moved to a small ranch that their son, Donald Nelson, built in the Casmalia Valley, near the edge of Vandenberg Airforce Base in the Central Coast area of California.
