Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Anne (Carter) Davis was a Virginia colonist.

Origin

Ann [or Anne] Carter was the daughter of Giles Carter of Turkey Island, Virginia, and Hannah Crewes.[1]

Birthdate is a guess, based on the estimated marriage date of her parents.

Ann Carter had a sister Mary Carter.[1]

Marriage

Ann married James Davis. This is proved by her father's 1699 will which mentions "my Daughter Ann now the wife of James Davis."[1][2]

Her sister Mary married to Thomas Davis.[1]

Death

No record has been identified for the death of Ann Davis.

Research Notes

This Ann Carter is sometimes confused with an Ann Carter from England who married a James Osborne in England. That family line is uncertain as described in the profile for James Osborne.[3] In fact, this Ann Carter, daughter of Giles Carter and Hannah Crewes, married to James Davis.

Carter-6014 and Carter-280 do not represent the same person because: Different names. Born more than a century apart.

Warning: Check the data.

A death date (Carter-280 died 1650) cannot be before a birth date (Carter-280 born 1675). c] A child's death date (Carter-280 died 1650) should not be before a parent is seven years old (mother Crewes-7 born 1655). A mother's death date (Carter-280 died 1650) should not be before one of her children's birth dates (Osbourne-69 born 1694). (16071) A parent's death date (Carter-280 died 1650) should not be more than 120 years before one of their children died (Osborne-159 died 6 Oct 1761). This would mean the child lived to be over 120. Re-wrote the biography and detached James Osborne as husband. I am unable to find any evidence or appropriate source(s) for him and have added Questionable to his profile. Now what to do with all the Osborne children?

Any ideas? Thanks!

According to the will of her father, Giles Carter, Ann was married to James Davis, There is no evidence to support a marriage to a James Osborne.

Will of Giles Carter dated 14 September 1699

Wrong Ann Carter!!! By Holly Hampton September 10, 2012

Ann, daughter of Giles Carter, was born in colonial Virginia. it is unlikely she would have married in England. Giles Carter her father immigrated to Virginia sometime prior to 1653. There is absolutely no evidence to support a marriage to James Osborne in Warwickshire, England. Her father's 1699 will does however support her marriage to James Davis. Perhaps another Anne Carter was confused with the Ann Carter, daughter of Giles Carter, of Turkey Island. This may have been an error that resulted from a mistake made in an earlier edit or merge,

Ann Carter is NOT the wife of this particular James Osborne. Osborne-55 was born in Suffolk County, NY and never lived in England.

Thank you, Jack. That date came in on a merge (unsourced) now removed

Carter-2943 and Carter-280 appear to represent the same person because: The date of death is the biggest discrepancy.

You may wish to reconsider the death date for Mary Ann. As it is, it appears that she died at the age of 120 yrs.
