Roy was born in Oklahoma before it was a state--he was fond of telling people he was born in Indian territory. His family traveled to Texas in a covered wagon, and settled first in a sod dugout while their home was being built. After he graduated from college, he taught college math, where he met his future wife, Stella Witt. He retired from the Texas school system in 1965, and led a full life of volunteerism and work in the church, where he served as Elder, until the late '90s,when his health began to fail.
