Research Notes

Notes: 1) There are three different death dates: 15JAN1791, 15OCT1791 & 15NOV1791. Trying to discern the correct date but believe that the Quaker records of his passing on "fifteenth day of the eleventh month, 1791" (15 NOV 1791) are correct. See source below. 2) The use of "Junior" at that time was meant to denote that he was named after his father. Upon the death of his father, the "Junior" was normally dropped and any children of the same first name were annotated as "III" or "IV" or "V", as is the case with the "John Carver"s in this family. However, upon the passing of the elder the use of " Jr" or "III" was normally discontinued but there are exceptions. Stradling-375, 17FEB2023

There are many "John Carvers" in this family line and the documented ones are as follows (numbers following name are mostly my attempts to keep them straight):

  1. John Carver Sr - (1657-1714) - married Mary Lane in England
  2. John Carver Jr - (1687-1769) - married Isabelle Weldon
  3. John Carver III - (1717-1791) - married Rachel Naylor
  4. John Carver IV - (1747-1817) - married Mary Buckman
  5. John Carver V - (1776-1849) - married Elizabeth Briggs
  6. John Carver VI - (abt 1821-1887) - married Phebe Ann (Hibbs) Tomlinson

Biography

John was a Friend (Quaker)

John Carver Jr, child of John Carver and Isabel Carver, was born on 30 September 1717 in Chester, Pennsylvania.[1]

The births of the children of John & Rachel Carver were recorded by the Abington Meeting of Friends (Quakers):

John Carver IV 26th of 10th mo 1747 [26DEC1747 - became John Carver IV]
Samuel Carver 2 day of 12 month 1749/50 [2FEB1750]
Eli Carver 28 day of 9 mo 1751 [28NOV1751]
Mahlon Carver 12 day of 7 mo 1754 [12JUL1754]
Mary Carver 11th day of 12th mo 1758 [11DEC1758]
Rachel Carver 24th day of the first month, 1763 [24JAN1763]

Mahlon Carver, child of John Carver and Rachel Carver, was born on 12 July 1754 in Montgomery, Pennsylvania. [NOTE: Source shows all six children's names and birth dates.][2]

John Carver Junior was recorded in a church event on 21 October 1772 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when both he and his son, Samuel Carver contributed funds "to Tend the Meeting House".[3]

John Carver (III) was in a tax record in 1785 in Philadelphia and his son, John (IV), was listed directly below him.[4]

In the 1790 census, John Carver (III) was in Byberry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with two females; possibly with his wife, Rachel and one other female, maybe Rachel as Mary was married. [NOTE: Directly beneath this John's entry is another entry labeled as "John Carver Jun" (actually would have been John Carver IV) with 2, 3, & 7 listed as Census persons.][5]

John Carver died on "fifteenth day of the eleventh month, 1791" (15 NOV 1791) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [Correction filed][6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
