Biography

Anne Cary was born in 1736 in Elizabeth City in the Colony of Virginia. She was the second [or possibly third] born of the quartet of famously beautiful and accomplished daughters of Colonel Wilson Cary and his wife, Sarah (Pate) Cary.

Anne's father, Colonel Cary, was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses and had inherited one of Virginia's largest fortunes and the family estate, a plantation called Ceelys, which was situated on the James River three or four miles from Hampton.[1][2] It was in this environment that Anne and her siblings were born and raised. While Anne's elder sister, Sarah, called "Sally," made a famous match when she married the future Lord Fairfax[3], Anne made a fine match of her own, marrying the Honorable Robert Carter Nicholas, Esquire, in 1751, the grandson of Robert ["King"] Carter by his eldest daughter, Elizabeth.

Anne and Robert had four daughters and six sons; seven of their children survived to adulthood. Most of their sons became lawyers, as was their father, and some served in the legislature. The best known of their sons was Miles Cary Nicholas, who served in the United States Senate from 1799 to 1804 and became the 19th governor of Virginia, serving a term from 1814 to 1816.[4]

Anne died on 5 December 1786 in Williamsburg, Virginia.[5]
