Obituary, Montgomery News, August 31, 1877: ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE Died on the 29th instant at his residence in Fillmore Twp., in Montgomery Co., Ills. after somewhat protracted illness, Mr. Abner Casey in the 76th year of his age. Mr. Casey was a native of Kentucky, from which State he removed to Illinois in 1823, and settled near the Illinois river, in what is now Fulton Co. The Indian depredation and warlike demonstrations immediately preceding the Black Hawk war endangered the safety of his family and he removed to Montgomery County in 1830, where he resided to the time of his death. Mr. Casey was the father of eight children, five of whom now well advanced in life, survive him. About the year 1846, he sustained the greatest affliction of his life in the death of his wife, the mother of his children, the companion of his early manhood and maturer years, the sharer of the toils and struggles of Pioneer life. He was for 35 years preceding his death, a consistent member of the Regular Baptist Church. In all his dealings with his fellow men, in his family, among his relatiives and neighbors he sustained the character of a sincere christian. Mr. Casey was a worthy type of the early settlers, the pioneer of Illinois, a class now fast dsappearing from our midst. In his mode of living, his habits and manners, he sustained the generous and hospitable character of the pioneer. Stranger and acquaintance alike found a friendly and hospitable welcome beneath his roof. Simple in his habits and wants, honest in every thought and impulse, his virtues may well be imitated by the old and young alike. [Ref: Fayette Facts, Vol. 24, No. 1, Pages 45-46].
