Biography

He was born about 1710 in Ireland and his parents were Sarah and John Nicholas Casey.

Possibly to escape political and/or religious persecution, he and his brother Abner Casey, emigrated about 1725 from Tyrone County, Ireland to America. They landed near Baltimore, Maryland where they lived a few years.

All of Abner's children were born in Roanoke, Virginia and then about 1770, he moved to South Carolina.

During the 1730s Peter left Baltimore, Maryland and moved to Pennsylvania.

Peter Casey first married about 1741 in Pennsylvania to Mary Magdalena DePuy. [1]

Some say that in the 1740s he migrated with John & Isaac VanMeter, who had purchased a warrant for 40,000 acres in Berkeley County, Virginia. John & Isaac were killed by Indians in 1757.

Peter settled on the south fork of the Potomac River (now near Moorefield, Hampshire County, West Virginia). When George Washington passed through in 1748 he noted that there were about 200 people living in the area.

Peter Casey married secondly on 15 Feb 1759 in Hampshire County, Virginia to Mrs. Mary Williams.

Peter passed away about 1787 in Virginia, USA.

4 Jan 1787 in the Last Will and Testament of Peter Casey states ...out of the money's arising from such sale of my Estate to pay unto my Daughters Sarah Casey, Catharine Casey and Rebecca Casey each the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds and unto my son in law Philip Ross the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds and unto my grand daughter Magdaline Conner the sum of fifty pounds and the remainder to be paid unto my son Nicholas Casey. My will is that my Daughters Sarah, Catharine & Rebecca Casey shall have the use of the said plantation so long as they shall find it convenient to stay on it. And lastly I do nominate constitute and appoint my friend Vincent Williams, Nicholas Casey and Sarah Casey Executors of this my Last Will and Testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the day and year first above written. Signed, Sealed and Published & Declared as for my Last will and Testament in the presence of Edw. Williams, Daniel M Neill, William Senior (?)

Research Notes

There was a Peter Casey who left a July 1787 Will in Hardy County, West Virginia with a 1788 appraisement.

Descendant Tim Sullivan says: "Capt. Benjamin Casey who died at Middlebrook, NJ was the son of Peter who was the brother of Abner. I have a deed from Hampshire Co. that reverts all of Benjamin's property to Nicolas Casey, brother of Benjamin. According to English Law, if a gentleman dies without issue, all property goes to the oldest brother. It also states in the deed that Benjamin was a Capt. who died at Middlebrook."

Pease do not use this document as a source for this family. I believe this is the information that people are conflating these profiles with. There must be 2 seperate families that consist of a Philip Ross marrying an Elizabeth Casey, daughter of a Peter Casey and Madaline ___. The information contained in this document does not match any of the records of this family. This family was never in Pennsylvania.

Casey-6778 and Casey-1590 appear to represent the same person because: Same Person

Casey-6111 and Casey-1590 appear to represent the same person because: No credible reason for treating these as different people. Both are the Peter Casey who was the father of Hanna Casey, baptized in 1742, with mother Magdalena de Pue.

The basis for the origins story on Casey-1590 is not determined, but the existence of an unsourced claim of origins does not make these two different people.
