Clarence Casey, 93, died Nov 24, 1989 at Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown. He was a member of the Methodist Church & American Legion. Clarence Austin Casey was born Jan 21, 1896, the son of James A Casey & Mary Phelps Casey. He attended rural Tama County schools. Clarence enlisted in the army in 1917 to serve in France, Germany & Italy during WWI. In the service he always won all the foot races. As sergeant he gave his men confidence. Clarence had orders to be on the front line fighting against Kaiser Wilhelm on Nov 12, 1918. On Nov 11, 1918 the Armistice was signed. The men were so happy & relieved they didn’t even care that they had to be commuted back on a cattle ship. Everyone cheered when they spotted the Statue of Liberty. The last six months on Clarence’s tour of duty was spent improving roads in the US. When he got home Clarence took over the management of the family farm. Clarence married Frances Kent on Dec 25, 1926. The couple lived above the Haven store and operated it for a short time after Polly Kent died. He and other young men performed boxing matches at Haven Hall. Clarence and Frances celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1976. Frances died Feb 9, 1979. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Roy Casey, who died in 1986, a daughter, Dorothy, a son, Donald and two half brothers, Sherman & Leo Casey. Clarence is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Hill and Donna Baker; five grandchildren, Vicki Chase of Cedar Rapids, Sue Hill of Coeur d’Alene ID and Pam DeCarlo, Lisa Brown & Tim Baker; four great grandchildren: Jeff & Jeremy Chase, Kacie & Jessica Brown. Pall bearers were Jeff Chase, Jeremy Chase, Richard Chase, Tim Baker, Tom Brown and John Casey. Mabel Kaloupek was the organist. Hrabak Funeral Home, Chelsea, was in charge of arrangements. He was buried at Haven Cemetery. Reverend Jacob Van Kekerix officiated.
