Biography

This profile is part of the Casteel Name Study.

Jesse Casteel b. 1760/1769 , Bedford, PA
(Imported only 1760 from Birth Date and marked as uncertain.)
Jesse's father Shadrach Casteel ...
Jesse's mother Lurena Unknown .

Jesse's wife was Sarah....no middle name has ever been found. Someone added Ann to her name making it Sarah Ann and this error has been perpetuated. Her name is not recorded in any of the land, probate, and etc. records. There is only one record that actually gives her name at all, and that a biography for their son Thomas and his wife Ruth Dicken, which is found in the [1]"HISTORY OF COSHOCTON COUNTY, OHIO ITS PAST AND PRESENT, 1740-1881. Page 649,
"CASTEEL THOMAS, Perry township; post office, West Carlisle; born in. Pennsylvania, in 1796; son of Jesse and Sarah Casteel. Mr. Casteel has been twice married; first, in 1816, to Miss Rutha Dicken. His fist wife died in September, 1836. They had ten children, viz: Amos, Darcus (deceased), Jessie, Eliza E., John W., Urias, Perry, Druzilla, Etha and Ruth. In 1836, he married Susannah Bottomfield, daughter of Henry and Rachel (Flagle) Bottomfield. They have seven children, viz: Rachel. Jackson, Jacob (deceased), James M. (deceased), Sarah, Susan and Thomas. Mrs. Casteel has lived in this county fifty-six years, and has been in the town of Coshocton only once in all that time."

Note

[2]Note:  ! He is # 8466 on Cheryl's Pedegree.

Government record: Census record: death: after 1830; Southampton Township, Bedford, Pennsylvania, United States Jesse was alive and recorded on the 1830 census for Southampton twp., Bedford Co., PA Government record: Census record: birth: about 1773; Bedford, Pennsylvania, United States

Jesse was on the 1800, 1810, 1820, & 1830 census records, using these census records his birth date calculates out at 1770 to 1776. New Family Search wouldn't let me use 1770/1776. Also he was probably born in Bedford County, PA because his father Shadrack was on the 1772 Tax records for Bedford Co.

Jesse was born about 1756.

Note and Documentation from Kathleen McKee Cook (1941-2017 part 1 Part 1 Unfortunately, these times were not terribly well recorded for prominent people, and even less so for the mainstream of pioneer families who settled in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

Researching my 4th great grandfather Jesse Casteel has been difficult. The paper trail is slim. Jesse and his siblings were named in his father's (Shadrack) will. Only the census, tax, and land deeds were records he was found on. I have had to rely on circumstantial or indirest evidence. Indirect evidence is a process by which conclusions are drawn based on the presence of people and circumstances in close proximity of each other. After many, many years of research, I feel like I have his family together.

According to Mapquest, Beans Cove is 7.73 miles from Flintstone, Allegany, MD.......no wonder Jesse's daughters married some men from Allegany Co., MD..........and Cumberland, MD is 16.10 miles from Beans Cove, PA. Now going north Beans Cove is 21.94 miles to Bedford, PA....so the Maryland towns were actually closer to where Jesse lived.

Remember the 5 mile rule ~ Genealogy Tip: A young man couldn't go courting at night much further than 5 miles or he wouldn't make it back home the next morning in time for farm chores. Five miles was a long way to go on foot, by horseback or by buggy. Young men often married a young women within that 5-mile radius, so looking to the tax lists and census for information within that radius that may lead to the maiden name of your female ancestors. If they resided close to the county or state line she may have lived in neighboring county or state.

I've not been able to find a will for Jesse, and I don't think he had one. Welcome comments--thanks!

Hi Ryan, When I was leaving on vacation I was thinking about my reply and gave you wrong information. There is no will or probate for Jesse, I was thinking of his father. Kathleen Cook, also descend of Jesse, did extensive on the ground research on Jesse. I will try and find her notes to me and forward them to you. If you send me your email address I will forward the information there. Bart
