William had a delayed birth certificate created in Texas that said he was born in Whitesville, Daviess County, Kentucky.[1] However, his death certificate gives his birthplace as Fordsville, Ohio County, Kentucky,[2] and his parents were living in Bartlett, Ohio County, Kentucky on 14 June 1880 when the census was taken, so an Ohio County birthplace seems likelier. Both certificates agree on 27 September 1880 as his birthdate.
William was living with his mother Alice/Nancy Alice in Fordsville, Ohio County, Kentucky in 1900.[3] Between 1900 and 1905, William moved to Sherman, Texas; William married Lillie Miller in 1905, and they appear in Sherman with their first two children on the 1910 census.[4]
Between 1918 and 1919, William and his wife and children moved from Sherman to Waco. William registered for the WWI draft in Sherman [5]; the 1919 city directory of Waco, Texas lists William, and he appears there with his family on the 1920 census.[6]
Between 1920 and 1930 (possibly by 1923), William and Lillie seem to have divorced, though no formal paperwork has been found yet. By 1930, William had remarried and was living in Dallas with his wife Ruby.[7] In 1940, William is still in Dallas[8]; his address on the census matches William's on his WWII draft card, which names William's brother Harland as a close relative. William appears in the 1934 Dallas city directory[9] and the 1940 census with a wife named Alma; it's not clear whether she's the same person as Ruby or a third wife. Alma eventually filed for divorce; the notice of filing appeared in the 12 December 1942 edition of the Dallas Morning News.
William seems to have worked with clothing maintenance for most of his life: while he was listed as a farmer on the 1900 census, the 1910 census lists his occupation as "tailor", and the 1909 Sherman City Directory lists a tailoring firm called Casteel and Miller (probably William and one of his brothers-in-law),[10] though his WWI draft card lists him as a salesman with Rosenwalds Brothers. The 1920 census lists him as a cleaner and dyer at a laundry; the 1930 lists him as the manager of a cleaning and pressing company. William's death certificate says he was a retired plant manager at Mueller Dye Works. In 1940 he's listed as the owner of a boarding house.
In 1942, William applied for a social security card. The application names his parents as Michael Casteel and Alace Martin. His SSN was 461-32-5688.[11]
William died in Parkland Hospital, Dallas, Texas on 12 October 1954 from perforation of the small intestine due to uremia. The death certificate says that he was divorced. [2] William was buried in Laurel Land Memorial Park, Dallas.[12]
