Biography

Alvia Maureen "Allie" (Casteel) Westmoreland (1869-1936)

[Note that some sources give her first name as Alvie or Alvin and her middle name as Marie.]

Allie was the second-born child of James H. Casteel and Teresa H. (Lentz) Casteel. She was born in the Lentzville/Temperance Oak/Pleasant Grove area of western Limestone County, Alabama, in 1869. A few years later, her family would move to the Elkmont area of north-central Limestone County, where she would live until her marriage.

On 1 September 1884, Allie Casteel married William T. "Willie" Westmoreland in Giles County, Tennessee (the county just to the north of Limestone County, Alabama).

Over the course of their marriage, Allie would give birth to eight children, two of whom would die young (they do not show up in census records). Their six surviving children were:

  • Bobbie Lee Westmoreland (b. 1887) — her married names were Burnett and Lambert
  • Bonnie W. Westmoreland (b. 1892) — her married names were Culver and Stutler
  • Nelson "Nell" H. Westmoreland (b. 1894)
  • Carlton (or Carolton) "Carl" Hannon Westmoreland (b. 1896)
  • Imogene Westmoreland (b. 1898) — her married names were McGehee and Bratten
  • Maxine "Maxie" Lou Westmoreland (b. 1900) — her married name was Cobb

[Note that in the 1900 census Maxine is listed as Ruthie and in the 1910 census she is listed as Marie for some inexplicable reason.]

Some sources suggest that Bonnie Westmoreland was born in Arkansas. However there are no other records that would suggest that the Westmorelands ever lived in Arkansas. It is possible, however, that the family traveled to Arkansas for a time to visit relatives who had moved there, and that Bonnie was born while they were there. Unfortunately, the only evidence we have to go by are a few census records that list Bonnie's birthplace as Arkansas.

Willie Westmoreland died sometime between 1900 and 1910. (In the 1910 census, Allie is listed as a widow and as the head of the family.) Unfortunately, no records of his death or burial have yet been found. Allie would never remarry.

Also sometime between 1900 and 1910 — it's not clear if it was before or after Willie's death — the family would move from Limestone County to Madison County, Alabama (the county just to the east of Limestone County), where they would live in the Dallas community just north of the city of Huntsville (now part of Huntsville). They would live there until Allie's death in 1936.

On 3 December 1904, Bobbie Westmoreland married G.D. Burnett in Madison County, Alabama. The marriage would be short-lived, ending in divorce sometime before 1910. (In the 1910 census, Bobbie is listed as single, is using her maiden name, and is living with her mother, Allie Westmoreland. The record of her third marriage in 1931 gives the bride's name as Bobbie Westmoreland Burnett.)

On 22 April 1916, Carl Westmoreland married Ela Morehead in Madison County, Alabama.

On 24 April 1918, Nelson H. Westmoreland married Mae Thomas in Tennessee. (The marriage record does not specify where in Tennessee.)

On 3 August 1918, Imogene Westmoreland married S.E. McGehee in Madison County, Alabama. Their marriage would be short-lived, ending in divorce sometime before 1920. (In the 1920 census, Imogene is listed as divorced, is using her maiden name, and is living with her mother, Allie Westmoreland.)

On 21 December 1918, Bonnie Westmoreland married William Culver in Madison County, Alabama. They would divorce sometime between 1920 and 1922. (In the 1920 census William and Bonnie Culver are listed as married, and they are living in the home of Bonnie's mother, Allie Westmoreland, as boarders. But in 1922 Bonnie would remarry.)

On 22 October 1921, Imogene Westmoreland married Vernon Bratten in Madison County, Alabama. Imogene's second marriage seems to have been more successful than her first, lasting at least until 1940 (the last census that has been made available to the public), and the name on her gravestone is Imogene W. Bratten.

On 27 May 1922, Bobbie Westmoreland married Leroy L. Lambert in Coffee County, Tennessee (roughly 50 or 60 miles northeast of where the Westmorelands lived in Madison County, Alabama). But apparently something strange happened with this second marriage — either they divorced for a while or else their marriage may have been annulled — because they remarried each other in 1931.

On 18 November 1922, Bonnie Westmoreland married Charles Stutler in Madison County, Alabama. However, Bonnie's second marriage wouldn't last much longer than her first, ending in divorce sometime before 1930. (In the 1930 census, Bonnie is listed as divorced, is using her maiden name, and is living with her mother, Allie Westmoreland.) It is unclear if Bonnie ever married again, but the name on her gravestone is Bonnie W. Westmoreland.

On 14 February 1925, Maxie Westmoreland married Riggs Monroe Cobb in Madison County, Alabama. They would still be married as of the 1940 census (the last one that has been made available to the public), and the name listed on her death record would be Maxie Cobb.

On 18 May 1931, Bobbie Westmoreland remarried Leroy L. Lambert in Lincoln County, Tennessee (the county just to the north of Madison County, Alabama). But their second marriage wouldn't last long. Leroy would die in 1937 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. (In the 1940 census, Bobbie is listed as a widow and is living with her sister, Bonnie.) It is unclear what the circumstances were that led Bobbie and Leroy to marry each other twice, but the bride's name on the record of their second marriage to each other was Bobbie Westmoreland Burnett. The fact that her last name is given as Burnett rather than Lambert raises the possibility that Bobbie and Leroy's first marriage to each other had been annulled for some reason. It's a mystery. Bobbie would apparently never marry again, since the name on her gravestone is Bobbie Lee W. Lambert.

Nelson Westmoreland died in 1932. Very little information has been found about his life other than census records and his marriage record. We know that he served in the army at some point (almost certainly during the First World War), but little more is known. We don't even know for certain where he was living in his final years or exactly where he died.

Alvia "Allie" Maureen (Casteel) Westmoreland would die in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama, on 1 January 1936. She would be buried in the Athens City Cemetery in Athens, Limestone County, Alabama.

Bonnie Westmoreland died in 1971 in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama.

Bobbie Lee Lambert died in 1972 in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama.

Imogene Bratten died in 1976 in Alabama (her death record has not yet been found).

Maxie Cobb died in 1985 in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama.

Carl Westmoreland died in 1988 in Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama.
