Research

Jacob Castle Jr. purchased 200 acres of land from Amos Allard in 1786. The area became more familiarly known as Castlewoods and was situated between Copper Creek, Grassy Creek and Moll's Creek in Russell County, VA. Although Jacob paid taxes on the land his family did not receive title to it until 20 years later.[3]

Tax Lists

  • Tithable - a person who paid, or for whom someone else paid, one of the taxes that the General Assembly imposed for the support of the civil government in the colony.
All males became tithable when they reached the age of 16. Males became responsible for paying tax when they reached the age of 21. On a few lists will be found 2 numbers following a name instead of 1. In those cases the first number represents the number of tithable persons above the age of 21 in the household while the second number represented the number of tithable persons 16 and above but under 21 years of age in the household. Occasionally a person will be found with the number zero (0) following their name. People could be exempted from paying tax due to age or bodily infirmities or when they were engaged in certain professions such as being a clergyman. Women will often be found with a zero (0) following their names. Women were not tithable and in those cases, no tithable males were living in the household.

Census Notes for the 1830 U. S. census record of Jacob CASSELL in Russell County, Virginia:
Suspiciously absent was the wife of Jacob CASSELL who was probably the Free White Female over the age of 45 years in previous census record. Unless our date of birth is significantly off, the Free white female enumerated in this census year as being aged 50 to 60 years is probably not Martha SHANE (also seen as Mary SHANE), the mother of his children. According to the birth estimate that was given by other researchers, she should have been approximately 83 years old. Another possibility is that the individual listed as over the age of 45 years in the previous census is the same as the free white female listed in the 50 to 60 year age bracket. But if that is the case then his wife of record was not enumerated in both of these census records. So the question remains when did she die and does that affect the hypothesis of the individuals in the 1820 and 1830 census records. The 1840 census has a free white female listed in the age bracket of 90 to 100 years old so that is probably her. Was she living with or visiting one of her children at the time of the enumeration of the 1830 Census record? Further research needed.
Search 1830 for heads of household with CASSELL name searched in Russell County, Virginia. No individuals had a Free White Female in the appropriate age bracket in their household. The possibility remains that she was living with a daughter that had married. Due to the nature of this census record being semi alphabetical, neighborhood information has been destroyed and it will be very hard to locate her if she was living in a daughter's household.

Hello, I am investigating Jacob Castle as a potential father for my ancestor, Delilah Castle Salyers. Through atDNA matches, I have identified Delilah as a member of the Castle family. Most geneological material I have seen lists her parents as Elijah (Jacob's son) and his wife Sarah (nee Suit). However, this cannot be correct as Delilah is estimated to have been born around 1804 while Elijah was born around 1790 and Sarah around 1804 herself. Elijah is, however, a reasonable age to be a brother of Delilah.

Is there still a reason these two can't be merged?

Castle-574 and Castle-1283 are not ready to be merged because: The places of birth do not match.
Castle-799 and Castle-574 appear to represent the same person because: Check births and fathers. 799 has a more precise death date.
