The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts is the oldest chartered military organization in North America, having been formed in 1637 as a citizen militia company. By 1638 it had been chartered by Governor Winthrop. Originally it was called The Military Company of Massachusetts, but the name changed to Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1737.
