Mary & John, sailed March 20, 1630
The Mary & John left Plymouth, England March 20, 1629/30 arriving in Nantasket Point|MAP on May 30, 1630. Captain Thomas Squibb had a contract with Rev John White, the inspiration of the journey and with Roger Ludlow, the new owner of the ship, who would sail on her, to deliver the passengers at a predetermined place on the Charles River.(Thistlethwaite, Frank p. 75) Instead, they found themselves on the desolate seaward shore of a narrow spit of land across the harbor from the entrance to the Charles River. See the Memoirs of Roger Clap for the story of how they came, with their cattle, boxes and bundles, to found Dorchester on the other side of the bay, still six miles south of the entrance to Boston Harbor and the Charles River.
The passengers of the Mary and John 1630, the first to arrive among all the Winthrop Fleet of 1630, founded one of the first towns of New England: Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1630. Roger Ludlow, owner of the Mary & John, led settlers from Dorchester on the trek across country to found the town of Windsor, Connecticut five years later in 1635.
