Biography
Cecil, son of Grover and Liza (Johnson) Cates, was born in Madison County, Kentucky, in 1911. He was brother of Oscar, Cecil, Emma, Beula, Lottie, Opal, Edgar, Edna, Kit, Valery, Lucy, and Russell. His father was a farmer in Madison County. In 1920, the US Census shows Cecil at age 8 living with his parents and siblings in Butler County, Ohio, where his father was working for a gravel company. By 1930, the family was back in Madison County.
