Research Notes

There are some Connecticut Death & Burials sources that state a Joseph Chamberlain, born abt 1697, died Apr 8 1765 in Virginia was buried in Sharon, Litchfield, Connecticut [2] [3]

Biography orinially stated that he married 2nd wife Hannah Gillette Oct 28 1682 in Sudbury, Massachusetts, but the marriage was to Hannah Gilbert [4] , which is before both were born. Family search has children born to that couple in Massachusetts after that date, so it is probably for a different person. The marriage detail with Hannah Gillette has Nov 30 1739 in Colchester, Connecticut, which is after his death date of Oct 3 1730, but no sources other than an unsourced site for that date.

Find A Grave: Memorial #118122520 has no gravestone or cemetery. It states his parents were Joseph Camberlain and Mercy Dickinson, both wives and is linked to daughter Lydia's page. [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Massachusetts birth records (sourced via Ancestry.com) indicate 3 children born to Joseph and Lydia Chamberlain/Chamberling in Dracut. Assuming this is a different couple, I have set up profiles for each of them, pending further research (also setting their father as unmerged match with this profile):
  • Aaron, b. 29 Oct. 1719 (so marriage would have been earlier?)
  • Esther, b. 21 Nov. 1721 (within a month of daughter Lydia?)
  • Joseph, b. 17 Nov. 1722

Chamberlain-3305 and Chamberlain-1271 appear to represent the same person because: part of duplicated family, spouse is duplicated
Find a Grave is not a credible reference. It could be a lead. The FAG has no tombstone photograph and no grave citation.
