Biography

Henry Chamberlain immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Henry Chamberlin, born about 1619 in England. He would have been 21 or older when he was made a Freeman in May 1645 at Hingham, Massachusetts.

He had land granted him in 1638 by the town of Hingham.[1]

He finally settled in Hull, Suffolk Co., before 1657, when granted 8 lots there. He was a townsman at Hull in 1661. In 1661, Henry and his father presented a petition to the General Court on behalf of his brother John, who had been imprisoned for his Quaker beliefs. Henry and his brother William were named as joint executors of their father's will dated 8 December 1673 and proved 29 July 1674, in which Henry was called "eldest son."

He married Sarah Jones about 1651; she was the daughter of Thomas Jones and his wife Ann Linney Jones.[2]

Death and Will

Henry dictated his own will the day before he died. The inventory of his estate was dated 6 December 1678. A lawsuit ensued in 1710 between Henry's widow, Sarah, and her daughter-in-law, Jane, widow of Sarah's deceased son, Henry, Jr.

Henry died between 2 Dec 1678 (will) and 14 Jan 1678/9 (probate)

Henry's will was dated 2 Dec 1678.

Henry Chamberlin of Hull, Suffolke, New England, blacksmith, weak in body, requested that his debts be paid. He named his wife Sarah Chamberlain, children not of age, daughter Milton, Robert, other four daughters, two sons Henry and Benjamin Chamberlin.
The will was proved in court 14 Jan 1678.[3]

Research Notes

  • Previoiusly this profile had "He arrived in Hingham about 1638 with his mother, wife, and two children.[1]" This has been deleted because Ethel Farrington Smith's article "Seventeenth Century Hull, Massachusetts and Her People", p. 351 indicates it was Henry Chamberlain the shoemaker who arrived with wife, mother, and two children. Additionally the reference to Sarah Jones being his second wife has been deleted. [4]

GMD says Blacksmith returned permanently to England by 1649. GMD says Shoemaker remained.

It looks like these two are still conflated because Henry Chamberlin II - 185 has blacksmith's death.

I submitted a question to American Ancestory 7/12/2020

These two need to be re-examined and separated.. I'll look at them and try to figure it out.

edit: it looks like GMD and NEHGR 139 are at odds, giving opposite information about which one returned to England.

Chamberlain-185 and Chamberlain-207 appear to represent the same person because: Same spouse. Birth date is only an estimate. (Only documentation of age is freemanship in 1645).

Chamberlain-207 and Chamberlain-185 are not ready to be merged because: birthdate uncertain. Sources needed

Hi, Is there a source for Henry's birth in Caversham? His father's profile indicates unknown origins. His wife was from Caversham, but I think his birthplace should be just England?
