Theophilus was born in 1737, son of Ephraim Chamberlain and Anne Merriman. His father Ephraim, a blacksmith, was killed during the New England expedition against Louisbourg in 1745, and an uncle adopted Theophilus and arranged that he received an education. During the Seven Years’ War, he served with Burke’s Rangers. He graduated BA from Yale College in 1765. His first wife died in 1776. He remarried in 1781.
Theophilus was a Loyalist and late in the Revolutionary War he accepted a captain’s commission in the New York city militia. He organized the resettlement of Loyalists at a new township in Preston, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, where he raied his own family.
He died on 20 July 1824.[1]
