Biography

William Chamberlain immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
William was a Friend (Quaker)

William was born in England about 1623.[1]

He was a Quaker.

He came to Hull, Massachusetts Bay with his parents and siblings. He died in 1678 from smallpox, and left nine children by two wives. His will included provisions for the children to learn to read and write and also referenced belief in the Quaker movement.

Marriages

William is believed to have been married twice, but no record of the name of either spouse has been found. Its been suggested that his first wife was possibly related to Robert Coombs or his first wife Mary. "Robert Coombs by 1657 owned that part of William's three acre homelot that bordered on Town Street. Moreover, following his death, William's ownership of Sheep Island was transferred to Robert Coombs."[2]

Children

By first wife:

  1. William, b 09 Apr 1652, m Eunice Ewell
  2. John, b 27 Aug 1654, died of smallpox 1690
  3. Job, b 1656, m Joanna Way
  4. Nathaniel, b 04 Sep 1659, m Abigail Rogers
  5. Freedom, b 1660, died at sea

By second wife:

  1. Benjamin, possibly bp 18 May, 1662
  2. Joseph, b 1665, m Mercy Dickinson
  3. Mary, b 1672, m Nathaniel Sheffield
  4. Sarah, b 1676, "a spinster"

In 1679, a distribution agreement of his estate was signed (recorded in 1681) by his sons William (eldest), John, and Job. The agreement mentioned his children, John Chamberlain of Hull, cordwainer, Job Chamberlain of Scituate, Plymouth, shipwright, William Chamberlain (eldest son) of Hull, weaver, Nathaniel Chamberlain, Benjamin Chamberlain, Mary Chamberlain, Sarah Chamberlain, Joseph Chamberlain, and Freedom Chamberlain.[3]

Research Notes

Sarah Jones, the daughter of Thomas Jones has sometimes been identified as either William's first or second wife.[citation needed] Sarah Jones was married to William's brother Henry. This error was common enough that the entry for William in Torrey’s New England Marriages Prior to 1700 to call out the mistake: "Chamberlain, William/Henry ( -1678) & ?1wf, 2nd______; (NOT Sarah JONES, Henry Chamberlin)"[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

William's two wives are unknown. Sarah Jones was married to his brother Henry. They need to be disconnected from husband and his children merged. Objections?

I've removed the two Sarah Chamberlain wives.

Could you supply some of those sources, Kaan? They would need to be documented.

I'm sorry but Sarah Jones was married to William's brother Henry. This is shown by Henry's will that names his wife Sarah and by the probate of Sarah Jones' father, Thomas, which mentions Sarah Chamberlain as the sister of Thomas' sons.

Kaan, I think the marriage to Sarah Jones is an error that somehow crept into William's history and has been repeated. Torrey in NE Marriages before 1700 specifically calls out that William was NOT married to Sarah Jones: "Chamberlain, William/Henry ( -1678) & ?1wf, 2nd______; (NOT Sarah JONES, Henry Chamberlin) {Hanover Hist 264; Suffolk Deed 12 :35; Chamberlin 1906-7) 36; Charlestown 197."

From NEHGR 142 (1988) p 354 on William Chamberlain: "He is traditionally believed to have been married twice, the name of neither wife being known. His first wife, married undoubtedly at Hull about died about 1660 and William married again the following year. His first wife may have been related to Robert Coombs or his first wife Mary. Robert Coombs by 1657 owned that part of William's three acre homelot that bordered on Town Street. Morevover, following his death, William's ownership of Sheep Island was transferred to Robert Coombs."

Its possible the World Chamberlain Association has more info?

So I added a disputed spouse and marriages sections, which I should have done when I detached. If anyone would like copies of the articles not in the public domain, PM me.

Of course we can always update if new information comes to light.

I just wanted to note that two of William's children are still attached to a Sarah Jones as their mother. Ideally, her name would be updated to Unknown Unknown and then she could be reattached as a spouse.

I put messages on the the children attached to Sarah regarding disconnecting the children, and was planning on merging her with the other Sarah Jones.

Chamberlain-2510 and Chamberlain-205 appear to represent the same person because: same father, same date of death
