Biography

Amory was born at Brainerd, Tenn., November 29, 1821;[1] married Dorothy Eunice Hoyt, of Indian descent on her mother's side. Her father was a brother of Rev. William C.'s wife. In 1838, our subject came with his mother from the Cherokee Nation in northern Alabama to Gibson, Susquehanna Co, Penn., with a horse and wagon. He became a minster and joined the Cherokees in their new home (Indian Territory) as a missionary and spent the remainder of his life with them. He wrote several brooks, translating their language into English. Mrs. C. died July 21, 1894. He died July 4, 1894.[2]
