On October 10, 1864 William H. Chambers of McHenry County, Illinois enlisted to serve one year or during the war, and was mustered into the United States service at Maringo, Illinois, on the 11th day of October, 1864, as a Private of Captain John W. Delaney's COMPANT "H", 8TH REGIMENT ILLINOIS VOLUNTEER CAVALRY, Colonel William Gamble commanding.
This regiment was organized at St. Charles, Illinois, in September, 1861, and on October 13th, moved to Washington, D.C., where it went into camp near Alexandria, VA., remaining there until April 12, driving the enemy at four different times across the Rappahannock. April 23, it embarked at Alexandria, and landed at Shipping Point, May 1st. On the 4th it moved to Williamsburg, and was assigned to the Light Brigade, General Stoneman commanding. From this time on the regiment participated in the following engagements: Mechanicsville, Gaines Mills, Malvern Hill, VA; Poolsville, Sugar Loaf, .....and Antietam, MD; Martinsburg...etc.
The said William H. Chambers enlisted as a recruit and joined his regiment at Fairfax, VA.
He rendered faithful and meritorious service while with his command, and receiced an HONORABLE DISCHARGE at Benton Barracks St. Louis, MO., on the 17th day of July, 1865, by reason of close of the war.
