Biography

Joseph Chambers was born in Canada Feb 29,1792. he and his father bothe served in the war of 1812. His mother's name was Sarah and his siblings were Minor, Thomas Whiten, Amanda, and Sarah. From New Jersey a family came to Canada named Gibbs. Joseph Chambers married Sally Gibbs in Canada Mar 31, 1815. From Canada both the Chambers and Gibbs moved to Switzerland County, Indiana. Then in 1822 were among the first settlers of Bartholomew County. Joseph was abou 5'8" tall, 190 lbs with a smooth face, dark brown hair and brown eyes, a rather quiet joker. He died in 1853, and his wife Sally, died in 1874 at the age of 80 in the home of Charity Carter. There children were:

  • "... When war broke out between the English Settlers and the French settlers to the North and west, the Jesuits encouraged the Indians to attack the advance of English settlers. As a protection to the English settlements, soldiers were sent from the Isles to protect them. In 1689 five companies landed in New York. Among these immigrants were three brothers by the name of Chambers. All of these brothers stayed and lived in the New World. Part of the family crossed into Canada and lived there for at least half a century. They returned to America during the war of 1812...."
