Biography

Alta (Chambers) Sexton lived in Appalachia, in Tennessee.

Alta was born on September 14, 1911 at Laxton near Paint Rock in Scott County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of George Chambers and Mary Thompson. She married Eamer Sexton Sr. on May 17, 1925 in Scott County. She passed away on September 6, 2004 at Fort Sanders Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee.

Alta Chambers Sexton, 92, of Oneida, passed away September 6, 2004, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville. Born in the Paint Rock community, September 14, 1911, she was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Thompson Chambers; her husband, Emer Sexton; one son, Emer Sexton, Jr.; great-granddaughter, Debra Cooke; sisters: Maisey George, Gladys Cross, Betty Sharp, and Irene Chambers; and one brother, Milford "Shorty" Chambers. She was a life-long member of Paint Rock Baptist Church. She is survived by three daughters: Lillian Jeffers of Oak Ridge, Berta Sexton and husband, Charles, of Huntsville, and Mary Emily Sexton of Greenwood, Ky.; one son, Rev. George Harold Sexton and wife, Ruth, of Helenwood; 25 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, 61 great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Margaret Jeffers of Huntsville; two brothers, Roy Chambers and wife, June, of Oak Ridge, and Herbert Chambers and wife, Nona lee of Huntsville; and many other relatives. Funeral service was to have been conducted September 8, in the chapel of Jones & Son Funeral Home with Rev. George Harold Sexton and Rev. Dean Barns officiating. Music was to have been provided by Ruth Sexton. Internment was to have followed in Sexton Memorial Cemetery in the Paint Rock community. Jones & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
