John Champernowne's daughter, Katherine, or "Kat" as she was known by at court, was governess to Queen Elizabeth I from the time she was 4 years old, teaching her astronomy, geography, history, mathematics, French, Flemish, Italian and Spanish. In addition, she taught Elizabeth pursuits such as needlework, embroidery, dancing, riding, and deportment.
